Google has chosen to build a £1bn data centre in Waltham Cross. UK's thriving tech sector, is now one of three in the world valued at 1 trillion (US dollars). The UK is the best place to invest in tech in Europe, with a tech industry worth three times as much as Germany’s and twice as much as France’s in 2023, based on venture capital investment, to say nothing of world-class talent, R&D capability and pro-innovation regulation. 

The IET is enabling the engineering profession to be at the forefront of the adoption of digital technologies across multiple industries; embracing new or changing technologies, processes, and tools and bringing about change in the way engineers innovate, design, build and use technology.

Digital innovation is also powering how public services such as crime prevention is being managed. Hertfordshire Constabulary is the territorial police force for the county tackling cyber-crime and was the first in the UK to adopt a prevention first approach to this growing security risk. Hertfordshire’s local authorities are committed to delivering future-proofed broadband and mobile connectivity  by attracting public and private investment and widening access to new and emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence. 

There are opportunities for digital businesses to contribute to – and benefit from – some of Hertfordshire’s foremost knowledge-based sectors and clusters – notably life sciences, as well as film and TV. This provides commercial opportunities to leverage tech to transform the business and skills landscape.
